2018 Captains 13u team places 3rd in Cooperstown!
The 2018 Captains 13u finished 3rd at the Cooperstown Baseball World week long 13u tournament on the college campus at SUNY in Oneonta, NY. The Captains won 6 games and lost 2, both to a very strong 13u team from the Dominican Republic. With some timely 2-0ut hitting and multiple double plays on defense the Captains outscored their opponents 56-41.
The talk on campus was that of Hunter Jewell who in his first appearance on the first day of the tournament on Sunday pitched a complete game 3-0 no-hitter, walking 4 and striking out 6 Wawautosa, WI batters. Then in his second start on Wednesday he had a perfect game in the 6th inning when with one out a disputable safe call was made on a close play at first after a slow grounder to short was cleanly fielded by Myles Gythfeldt. The crowd was stunned by the apparent incorrect safe call and reminded all of the almost perfect game by Armando Galarraga in 2010. (MLB in 2016 awarded Galarraga with a perfect game siting new replay rules that clearly showed he was out at first on that last play of the game). Hunter retired the next two batters to record his second shutout of the tournament, this time a 1-hitter. He walked none and struck out 6 again.
Danny Weiss led the Captains at the plate batting .400 for the week with 7 RBI. Justin Heinsohn hit .333 while Tyler Brown hit .308 with 4 RBI. Aidan Stern batted .300 with 9 runs scored to lead the Captains.
